Midway Mfg. wurde das Spiel bereits im Sommer 1972 von Nolan Bushnell vorgestellt und im Februar 1973 bei Midways Konzernmutter Bally präsentiert. Im September 1973 erschien der Midway-Lizenznachbau unter dem Namen Asteroid – nicht zu verwechseln mit Ataris Asteroids, welches erst sechs Jahre später herausgebracht wurde. Die im August 1973 erschienene Variante im Fiberglasgeäuse ist auf 50 Stück limitiert. Space Race ist das erste Arcade-Rennspiel. Im Zuge des Insolvenzverfahrens der nordamerikanischen Atari-Gesellschaften 2013 wurden die dann bei der seit 2006 inaktiven Tochtergesellschaft Humongous Entertainment liegenden Rechte an Space Race an den kalifornischen Videospiel-Publisher Tommo Inc. verkauft. |
